Established in 1993, the William & Mary Journal of Women and the Law provided a forum for scholarly debate on gender-related legal issues. In 2018, the journal changed its name to the William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice and continued publication with volume 25. Now, the William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice is the fourth ranked law journal in the country for both Gender, Women, and Sexuality as well as Minority, Race, and Ethnic Issues. JRGSJ resides in the top 125 of specialized law journals and has existed for over thirty years. We publish three issues per year, with each issue featuring professional and student-written scholarly articles that provide a forum for debate without promoting a specific ideology. JRGSJ has a strong focus on public policy and social issues and strives to stimulate open discussion of these issues by including a variety of viewpoints. Our published articles cover many topics, such as reproductive rights, civil rights, politics, the criminal and civil justice systems, labor and employment law, administrative law, international law, and tort law.
JRGSJ hosts an annual symposium based on its special issue of the year. The 2026-2027 symposium will address issues regarding AI and civil rights with a particular focus on algorithmic discrimination of marginalized communities.
